Story behind the song
These are the B-movie western horses..movies made prior and after WWII. They are not the horses from the Lone Ranger TV show.
Tonto's first horse was named White Feller or White Fella. Sunny was called Scout in the movies.
Silver's actual name was Silver Chief. He was a well trained movie horse and appeared in Gone With the Wind.
The actor who played the Lone Ranger in the pre-war movies was replaced. He was killed while serving in the Pacific during WWII. Chief Thundercloud/Victor Daniels was the actor who played Tonto. He owned Sunny. Sunny is buried in a pet cemetery in California. His funeral marker mentions he was the beloved horse and pet of Chief Thundercloud. The marker indicates he was a "good Scout."

My name is Sunny
I am a paint horse
You may know me as Scout
I rode with Silver
And the Lone Ranger
And with Chief Thundercloud
Me and Silver Chief
We tried to give them grief
Didn't want to be no man's slave
In a world that was not real
Fake arrows and wagon wheels
We were made to behave
(Chorus)
At night we rode with Conquistadors
Through the Steppes with the Mongol hordes
Hunted buffalo on the high plains
We rode away with the robber's loot
Carried men with guns that shoot
No bits, no spurs, no tugging on the reins
By day we were the trusty steeds
Rode with men of noble deeds
Knew where to run and where to quit
The white man was the hero then
The colored one was his friend
Our backs were just a place for them to sit
One day the news came round
No more cameras, no more sound
Silver Chief was loaded on a train
Thundercloud took me home
Now I walk this fence alone
Never saw Silver Chief again
(Chorus)
At night I ride with Conquistadors
Through the Steppes with the Mongol hordes
Hunt buffalo on the high plains
I ride away with the robber's loot
Carry men with guns that shoot
No bits, no spurs, no tugging on the reins
