I am a pseudo-medieval musician, scribe and artificer. With layered levels of simple instruments, my sounds are often uniquely archaic. While some of my music is entirely original, most of my numbers are my personal arrangements of renaissance and medieval melodies from antiquity. Story behind the song
In the late 1970s, Betty Osborn encouraged me to read Ursula K. Le Guin's book, A Wizard of Earthsea. This song is dedicated to Betty-O's memory.
Lyrics
Born on the Isle of Gont, his fate seemed cast in bronze, A hawk among the sparrows of the inland highlands, with the power to shed his bonds. He learned from a witch how to gather the mists, sent Kargad soldiers into the sea. When he left behind Ten Alders, he faced the mystery - between the earth and sea. Although prenticed to silent Ogion, impatiently he hungered for more. So he sailed on the Shadow from Andrades, to be schooled on a distant shore. On the Isle of Roke, a dark shadow awoke, from rift between enemies, that left behind a scar to mar the face of mystery - between the earth and sea. In the silence, hear the word. In darkness, see the light. And only in the dying, can there be new life. High above the hawk may fly, freely on the open breeze. And only then by keeping still do we chase the Mystery - between the earth and sea. West of the Archipelago, On Pendor’s distant shore, There a clutch of dragons culled. He forced Yevaud to to pledge his word. Yet onward still, beyond his will, the shadow of his destiny was ever creeping closer as he raced the mystery - between the earth and sea. Accepting saged council, no longer filled with pride, the prey becomes the hunter, no longer would he hide, but instead decide to turn the tide, along with chosen family to sail beyond the farthest shore and embrace the Mystery - between the earth and sea. In the silence, hear the word. In darkness, see the light. And only in the dying, can there be new life. High above the hawk may fly, freely on the open breeze. And so too each one of us must embrace our mystery - between the earth and sea.
