Story behind the song
What can I say about this song?
Well, as I have always introduced it live simply with, "This is a true story", you can probably guess it's deeply personal.
Like Emptiness, this one started out as a poem, written as therapy more than anything else, after the end of a particularly messy relationship though, I hasten to add, not the same one that inspired Emptiness.
The poem was written in the latter half of 1997, shortly after Scarlett was born. After showing it to Chaz, he quickly had some ideas about fitting it to some music he had been playing around with at the time. Working together on some rapid arrangement work and the song was born.
The lyrics pretty much speak for themselves, and so I play the song in the hopes that one day she will hear it and know that I didn't just walk away and abandon her.
Lyrics
You came into the world, early one summer’s morn.
Your cry filling the sky, at the break of dawn.
Where was I your father? Nowhere to be found.
I had no choice. It’s not my fault. My hands, you see, were bound.
Your mother took you from me, before you were even born.
Is it fair to suffer so? All for a woman’s scorn.
You came into the world, early one summer’s morn.
Your cry filling the sky, at the break of dawn.
Where was I your father? Nowhere to be found.
I had no choice. It’s not my fault. My hands, you see, were bound.
I see you look just like me, from glimpses I have caught.
Will I ever get to tell? My love for you my daughter.
