The Funky Deva...a songspinner of acoustic/soulful spirit-driven music for the mind, body and soul!
I first began to write songs as a small child. I was very drawn to music of all kinds, but especially to music that had "soul". Now this could mean Aretha Franklin or Judy Garland, both possess incredible soul! Later in my life I was influenced by so many great songwriters/performers...Carole King, James Taylor, Tracey Chapman, Phoebe Snow. I think I am a distillation of so many things and genres of music. I did not try to copy anyone...for instance I believe still, that "soul" music is not so much a genre, as it is what you put into the song of your own soul. I put a lot of soul into everything I sing!

Story behind the song
Butterfly Dreams was originally a poem that was inspired during this very amazing time in my life. I met an amazing poet, singer/songwriter Norman Cotton who so touched my heart and life! Thus during this period I wrote like crazy...also I saw a wonderfully talented Welsh writer on his page...which led me to Vicky Adair (Our Little Drummer Girl)and Debbie! What synchronicity has happened between us all. (read my story on One Winged Angels and Star Child for more) Anyways back to this one...I had been doing music at my awesome friend Pat Stinett's studio (A Wing and a Prayer) and he had the music, and said hey, what could ya do with this...so I just sat down and pulled up Butterfly Dreams, and we did it in one take...how marvelous! And it just fit like a glove! Wow! I love this little song, because it just came straight from my heart and soul...just poured right out like water, and because it is co-written with my best friend in the world! My fav verse is the "I'm a hesitant poet" verse...so true for me. Sometimes writing can be like pulling teeth and the sometimes it just flows...like the sweet bread of heaven, just fallin' from the sky. So incredibly sweet! Hope it inspires you to follow your dreams wherever they may lead...it is surely worth it! :) Peace and love, *sher*
Lyrics
Every little boy and every little girl as they make their way into this big wide world... Pockets full of miracles...hearts burstin' to the seams, and do we quietly surrender...or later lose our dreams* I see a man huddled on the corner of my downtown street...I see the babies of the world with no food to eat. And it makes my troubles seem so trivial and small...Can't make any sense of it all -no sense at all* *Dreams are fragile things... Floating on gossamer butterfly wings And I have had some dreams... I have a dream...I have a dream Oh...how cold and empty this life seems To a woman or a man...who ain't got a dream... who ain't got a dream!!! I am a hesitant poet, in desperate hours of naked need, the sweet bread of heaven gently rains down on me...Bringin' me hope and inspiration-such a glorious sight to see...All the answers for this world are livin' inside, a dream... *Dreams...
