Story behind the song

I wrote this last December while our dad was in the rest home battling cancer.
He lost the battle on January 25th, 2007, but he "Won the war!"

Our father is a good man who believes in doin’ right
Even if what it takes is to lay down his life
To protect his wife, family and US of A
Yeah! He’s on active duty, each and every day

One of eight kids from the old school and a strong bloodline
Just like his dad before him, he is patient and kind
He loves God and believes there’s no better way
To live with one another, than kneel and pray, and walk in faith

Now our father’s in a rest home, eighty-six years young
By his bedside we reflect on everything he’s said and done
When Mama cries she can’t go on without him by her side
He gently reassures her, wiping tears from her eyes

Though we don’t want to lose him, we know for a fact
If the good Lord came and took him, we’d know where he’s at
He says reaching Heaven is just a prayer away
And he’ll be looking forward to hearing from us every day
