Story behind the song
"Don't Let Your Deal Go Down" is an old-time country song long popular with string bands throughout the South. It was known as early as 1911. When Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers recorded it in 1925, they sang, "Don't let your deal go down, 'til your last gold dollar is gone." The United States last minted gold dollars for circulation in 1889, and they were already old by 1925. So we are not wrong when we sing "last old dollar" instead.
