Story behind the song
This is a political protest song against nuclear weapons and nuclear power. Originally recorded by Malibu, CA band Flashback in 1982. This is a reboot recorded for Frances Plante-Scott's 2004 album 'Organic Plante' on Orchard Records. I wrote this song when Ronald Reagan was president of the US and there was a large cold war arms race going on and the 3 mile island meltdown disaster had just happened. The movies The China Syndrome and Silkwood all came out around this time as well.
Lyrics
Nuclear Blues
Well my hair is falling out, and my lungs are caving in
I feel like I just stepped out of a microwave oven, hey hey I've got them radiation blues
Well I work in a section called the 903, and if I work there much longer it's gonna be the death of me, because I've got
The Nuclear Blues once again, got radiation dripping all over my body
My president said son there aint' no need to cry because this thing called plutonium aint' gonna make you die , Hey, hey, I don’t know if I believe you
Well all I gotta know, is to know the truth and I heard about 3 tons of this stuff flew away right outta the blue because I’ve got the nuclear blues once again
Ever heard of place called three-mile isle, they got so much radiation stack it all in a pile
One fateful day it did happen to leak and China Syndrome was the biggest movie of the week
Yeah, yeah, I’ve got the radiation blues, Well mister Martin Sheen is trying to stop the abuse, and Uncle Sam is saying it aint’ no use, Because I’ve got, the nuclear blues once again
We’re all Americans, I know that’s true
Look at that patriot there wearing his red white and blue
I just wish the government, would look and see
How much happier all of us would be
Hey Hey, if we were all one country
Well I see the stars and stripes sittin’ on the flag
But those nuclear missiles boy they surely are a drag, Because I’ve got, the nuclear blues once again
