A man reminisces of his grandfather exuberantly praising God while working in his orchard. Inspired by the fragrance of the blossoms and the dew on the leaves, grandpa spends his life on holy ground, joyfully working and praising God.

Story behind the song
Angela Jones was conducting a radio interview with an artist on WQRP in West Carrollton, OH. The discussion centered on country living and Angela reminisced about her grandfather spending much of his time in his apple orchard. It inspired me to think of how close to God a person feels when they are out in nature. It doesn't matter where you are; hiking in the mountains, sitting on a river's edge fishing or just enjoying the sound of the water rushing by, working in your garden, or tending the trees in an apple orchard. It is a blessing enjoying God's creations and, wherever that finds you at any given moment; it is always a fitting place to talk with Him. I wrote Down in the Apple Orchard because, when Angela mentioned remembering her grandfather working in the apple orchard, the vision of an old man working in the breeze and fresh air among the apple trees every day brought back memories of walking among apple trees. I remembered the sweet smell of the blossoms and the apples. I remembered the peace and serenity. Then I thought what a wonderful place to worship God and give thanks. The next thing I knew, I was writing "Down in the Apple Orchard." “Down in the Apple Orchard” was signed by Heath Brown Music (ASCAP) in April of 2011. You crown the year with Your goodness, And Your paths drip with abundance. They drop on the pastures of the wilderness, and the little hills rejoice on every side. The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered with grain; they shout for joy, they also sing. - Psalm 65:11-13 (NKJV)
Lyrics
Down in the Apple Orchard Author: Ernest DeWaters, Jr. (ASCAP) © 2011 Heath Brown Music (ASCAP) Telephone: (920) 398-3279 Email: martab@centurytel.net (Chorus) Down in the apple orchard, Grandpa use to pray. You could see him praisin’ the Lord, almost every day. You could hear him shout, ‘Hallelujah, thank you for the rain!’ He’d smell an apple blossom, ‘Hallelujah!’ He’d shout again. (Verse 1) There’s somethin’ special ‘bout that fragrance in the air. When you smell those apple blossoms, you’ll know the Spirits there. When I see the sparkle of the dew upon the leaves, Hallelujah, I can’t help it, I just fall down on my knees. (Chorus) (Verse 2) Preacher says the devil rules this world, but I do declare, “Down in that apple orchard, ol’ Satan, he ain’t there.” If you could see ol Grandpa prayin’, and shoutin’ through the trees, You’d know there’s only room for Jesus, if you please. (Chorus) (Verse 3) Down in the apple orchard, Grandpa went to pray. He got down on his knees; oh, Lord there he stayed. Grandpa died praisin’ the Lord; and the last thing I heard him say, (Inhale) ‘Smell those apple blossoms, heaven’s on its way!’ (Chorus) (Tag x2) He’d shout again.
